Royal Challengers Bangalore takes to Social Media

The best job in the world campaign had many spin offs. Following the global success of this PR campaign, brands everywhere jumped the bandwagon and came out with their own versions of the same. From the Indian perspective, one interesting such campaign has been Royal Challengers Bangalore hunt for their chief blogger for the Champions League slated to held later in October this year. For the uninitiated, RCB is the Twenty 20 cricket team owned by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, which was runners up in this years Indian Premiere League.

Interestingly enough the brand has launched this campaign to hunt for its chief blogger, chief photographer and chief fan where the winners would travel with the team during the Champions League.

Currently blogger Raghav Ramaiah is heading the polls while the RCB fan club boasts of a whopping 24182 fans! The last date to apply for these positions is midnight 27th September (IST). Following this Anil Kumble, Coach Ray Jennings and Rajan Bala would nomite the three lucky winners ( one from each category).

For us social media enthusiasts this is a good study on how brands in India are waking up to the possibilities of social media. True their twitter, does not have too much of interaction and facebook could have been leveraged better, but still has to be said, that this is a good and successful case study in the use of Social Media by an Indian brand. What I have liked is the use of their site rather than their social media channels. ( eg their blog has posts from only two people who have been alternatingly posting/ not the most democratic of blogs), but their campaign is good and their incorporation of a social media philosophy into their main site is worth cheering. Though I wish I had seen a little bit more buzz around it in the online media. (A Google search for   “Royal Challengers Bangalore Hunts for Blogger” left me with no meaningful results except their main web link.)

All in all good signs of times to come. More and more Indian brands are waking up to the immense potential that social media provides for brand building.  Royal Challengers as a brand have embraced it and its worth applauding. May the best men win this campaign and may we get to see more of such campaigns

Way to go RCB. You guys are getting Social!
