And now the Talibs are tweeting

The Taliban are tweeting. Yes even thought they christened the Internet as unholy and banned it in Afghanistan since 2000, they themselves have always maintained a website of their own since 2001.

So now its time for the world to follow @alemarahweb,

While the handle started tweeting those 140 character specials since December 19, it was mostly in Pashtun. But then you cannot create mass propaganda in a language which very few people follow.  According to a Guardian report, the Taliban have now taken to English to communicate with the world.

The Guardian also  claims that most of these reports are highly exaggerated reports of casualties and death tolls, which have little veracity.

Most of the hyperlinks point back to an English website which claims to be the official website of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. You can check the site here. The site is completely in English.

Cannot say if this violates any clauses in Twitter’s end user agreement, but have to say that in a very short time, they have gathered over 2000 followers.

This also follows in the tradition of  extremists groups using savvy new media technologies to run their media and PR machinery

What next ? Checking in on Foursquare ?
